The Big Outside

THE BIG OUTSIDE
I remember a time
we'd go out knocking on doors
call our friends outside
go sit on bedroom floors
you can bring your guitar
so your fingers don't get bored
you can read in a corner
while I put on a record
maybe there's hope with that girl you like
maybe there's no hope at all
making our way in the big outside
making our way to the end of it all
we can head to the river
follow paths we know so well
talk about what we're feeling
we've both got stories to tell
it's the sound of the summer
it's an endless refrain
put the tape on rewind brother
let's hear it again
maybe there's hope in that poem you wrote
maybe there's no hope at all
making our way in the big outside
making our way to the start of it all
I'll see you when all this is over
I'll see you when life starts again
see you around in the big outside
when are we gonna start living again

Lady Alice
03:28
|
|||
Lady Alice was sitting in her bower-window,
Mending her midnight quoif,
And there she saw as fine a corpse
As ever she saw in her life.
'What bear ye, what bear ye, ye six men tall?
What hear ye on your shoulders?'
'We bear the corpse of Giles Collins,
An old and true lover of yours.'
'O lay him down gently, ye six men tall,
All on the grass so green,
And tomorrow, when the sun goes down,
Lady Alice a corpse shall be seen.
And bury me in Saint Mary's church,
All for my love so true,
And make me a garland of marjoram,
And of lemon-thyme, and rue.'
Giles Collins was buried all in the east,
Lady Alice all in the west,
And the roses that grew on Giles Collins's grave,
They reached Lady Alice's breast.
The priest of the parish he chanced to pass,
And he severed those roses in twain;
Sure never were seen such true lovers before,
Nor eer will there be again.

I wanna be
your answering machine
I wanna lose
whole afternoons to being with you
Send me a postcard
from underneath the maddest stars
Tell me I made you smile
Even if it was only for a while
I wanna dance
with you at the end of time dance
and watch you spin away
into infinity
Send me a postcard
from underneath the maddest stars
Tell me I made you smile
Even if it was only for a while

The big bad wolf was sitting all alone, said
with my reputation no-one wants to know
all I'm asking is, throw me a bone
my house of dirt, it ain't no kind of home
under the bridge the troll shivers and cries
when are you people gonna realize
I may be ugly but I've got my pride
the grass ain't greener on the other side
here comes the serpent, he looks downtrod
like he got shafted in a deal with god
all I ever did is share the things I know
you need a little evil if you're gonna grow
now let me tell you what really stings
you say my name, they say there ain't no such thing
every day I feel a little smaller inside
when they see me coming they still run and hide
I may have eaten this, I may have eaten that
You can cut me open, you can take it all back
they say I'm dangerous but they got all the power
they say I'm poison but I'm just a little sour
the big bad wolf he's sick of being all alone
with a big bad reputation and a pile of little bones
he's got big eyes he wants to see the world with
he's got big eyes he wants to mesmerise the girls with

Drinking for England

And you are in the same part
of the same pub as me
and you are sick at heart
and you are lost at sea
and you are in the same part
of the same country as me
and you are sick of it all
as you keep telling me
and they have broken your heart
and broken your country
and you are drifting apart
from your own family
and you are in the first part
of the twenty-first century
and you are sick as a parrot
that drank its weight in bleach
and they have stolen your heart
from your own family
and you are drinking for England
so very heavily

I would not trouble to look down on you
if you were cast out and thrown to the wolves
your run of good luck has come to an end
and now it's time to meet all your new friends
This is the groper, say how do you do
He's been a danger since '72
This is the squeaker, with gin in her tea
I'm sure you'll get along famously
On Fridays we all stand on our heads
it brings perspective
Think back to our university days
we were selected
Maybe it's everyone else who is wrong
it's brave of you to keep banging the drum
surely the cops and the judges agree
you are a beacon of sanity

Missing Pieces

I’ve not been quite myself
Things have been going wrong
I may be missing something
I may be missing someone
I used to know myself
Thought I knew right from wrong
But now I’m missing pieces
I don’t know where they’ve gone
Send me a small reminder
Of how things used to be
Send me a picture darling
A polaroid of you and me
I’ve not been quite myself
Things have been going wrong
I must be missing something
I must be missing someone
